The record's keen combination of off-the-cuff production and no-fat songwriting is likely linked to its method: With several songs whittled down over years of performances, Feist-- aided by her usual one-named conspirators Gonzales and Mocky, along with Jamie Lidell and others-- recorded them in less than a week in a manor outside Paris. JUNIOR WELLS' CHICAGO BLUES BAND - Hoodoo Man Blues (1965) [Expanded Edition 2011]
This 1965 album is where vocalist and harmonica player Junior Wells comes into his own. An early collaboration with Buddy Guy, the two of them sum up the 1960s funk-rock-blues that lay ahead. Hoodoo Man Blues inspired Paul Butterfield, Eric Clapton, and a host of other musician-fans. Wells and Guy don't shy from creating James Brown-funkified blues, or from putting a rock edge to their blues; but neither do they shy from traditional blues. Their version of 'Good Morning Little School Girl' is a proper update, still menacing, with less of a country blues feel. Also not to be missed is the instrumental workout 'Chitlin Con Carne.'
Hoodoo Man Blues is considered by most blues aficionados and fans to be one of the best blues albums of all time. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and was chosen by the readers of Living Blues magazine as a top ten Desert Island Blues disc. Recorded on September 22 & 23, 1965 Hoodoo Man Blues was the first studio album to capture a working Chicago blues band doing essentially what they did on stage without time constraints to accommodate the singles market. Of course both Junior Wells & Buddy Guy went on to become international blues stars. This new digipak re-issue contains 17 performances: the 12 songs from the original LP, 3 alternates that have been available on CD plus 2 never-before-released performances. There's one completely unissued song, I Ain't Stranded, and an alternate take to Yonder Wall in which Buddy Guy is playing through the Leslie speaker as he did on the title track, something guitar players are still copying to this day.

JETHRO TULL - Aqualung (1971) [40th Anniversary Special Edition, 2011]
'Aqualung' is the fourth studio album by the rock band Jethro Tull. Released in 1971, 'Aqualung', despite the band's disapproval, is regarded as a concept album, featuring a central theme of 'the distinction between religion and God'. Released at a time when a lot of bands were embracing pop-Christianity (a la Jesus Christ Superstar), Aqualung was a bold statement for a rock group, a pro-God antichurch tract that probably got lots of teenagers wrestling with these ideas for the first time in their lives. This was the album that made Jethro Tull a fixture on FM radio, with riff-heavy songs like 'My God,' 'Hymn 43,' 'Locomotive Breath,' 'Cross-Eyed Mary,' 'Wind Up,' and the title track. And from there, they became a major arena act, and a fixture at the top of the record charts for most of the 1970s.
Disc One features a NEW, previously unreleased stereo mix of the album. Disc Two contains additional recordings from 1970-71 and includes unheard stereo mixes.

MUDDY WATERS - Muddy, Brass And The Blues & Can't Get No Grindin' (2011)
So it's sort of refreshing – if a little odd – to find out that a British label has reissued two of the bluesman's lesser-known Chess discs in a two-fer package. This will likely be the first time newer Waters fans have heard most of these tracks, and they're definitely worth hearing, even if they never got the glory of his more timeless material. Both albums have some tremendous moments on them, and they help show the progression Waters was following during a time in his career when he seemed to be exploring one style after another. 'Muddy, Brass And The Blues', from 1967, was the last album he recorded before the polarizing Electric Mud. It couldn't be more different from that psychedelic-flavored set; where Electric Mud tried to inject the spirit of Jimi Hendrix into Waters' guitar playing, Muddy, Brass And The Blues mostly dispensed with his guitar altogether, in favor of an uptown sound created by overdubbing a horn section after the basic tracks were completed. The focus here is on Muddy's vocals, which bear a distinct R&B/soul tint as opposed to the gritty, pure blues of his previous work. 'Can't Get No Grindin', from 1973, is an entirely different animal. Waters' penultimate album for Chess, it was something of a return to form for the Chicago bluesman, with a rawer, slide-guitar-fueled sound. Several tracks were updates of previous hits; 'Mother's Bad Luck Child' remade his 1948 single 'Gypsy Woman,' with a slowed-down tempo and a healthy dose of Waters' pinprick-sharp guitar. 'Can't Get No Grindin' (What's the Matter with the Mill)' took Memphis Minnie's song and turned it into something funkier, thanks to Pinetop Perkins' bouncy organ and the call-and-response vocals.
Digitally remastered two-fer containing a pair of Chess Records albums from the Blues great: 1967's 'Muddy, Brass And The Blues' and 1973's 'Can't Get No Grindin'.

TOM WAITS - Bad As Me - Deluxe Limited Edition (2011)
Throughout his career, Tom Waits has created milestone albums that serve both to refine the music that has come before, and to signal a new phase in his career: Rain Dogs and Mule Variations are both counted by fans as among these pivotal works. Now comes Bad As Me, his first studio album of all new music in seven years, which finds Tom Waits in possibly the finest voice of his career and at the height of his songwriting powers, working with a veteran team of gifted musicians and longtime co-writer/producer Kathleen Brennan. From the opening horn-fueled chug of “Chicago,” to the closing barroom chorale of “New Year’s Eve,” Bad As Me displays the full career range of Waits’ songwriting, from beautiful ballads like “Last Leaf,” to the avant cinematic soundscape of “Hell Broke Luce,” a battlefront dispatch. On tracks like “Talking at the Same Time,” Waits shows off a supple falsetto, while on blues burners like “Raised Right Men” and the gospel tinged “Satisfied” he spits, stutters and howls. Like a good boxer, these songs are lean and mean, with strong hooks and tight running times. And there is a pervasive sense of players delighting in each other’s musical company that brings a feeling of loose joy even to the album’s saddest songs. Bad As Me is a Tom Waits album for the ages. - amazon.com

STEVE HACKETT - Beyond the Shrouded Horizon (2011)
Steve Hackett has earned the reputation of being one of Britain's finest composers and guitarists. Peter Gabriel invited him to join Genesis in 1970 and his involvement led to 8 albums. His complex and distinctive playing contributed heavily to their early success, developing an elegance and sophistication which have become his trademark and he has since achieved consistent solo success internationally. - amazon.com
'My new album Beyond the Shrouded Horizon breaks free from its moorings in early autumn and sets sail through choppy riffs and sudden electric storms to the odd romantic isle...From Sinbad seas to Startrek oceans of deep sky, it's an odyssey. Invisible cords link pop to pomp, blues to baroque, embracing all genres discovered along the way. Let ethnic guitar forces and power of song take you to where waves crash through de-tuned orchestras over the edge of charted territories.' - comment by Steve Hackett

B. B. KING & PHISH - East Rutherford 24 February 2003 (2003)
Blues legend B.B. King joined jam-band jernaut Phish on stage (Feb. 24) at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J. About 45 minutes into the concert, King was introduced and handed his trademark guitar, Lucille, and the group tentatively eased into a 23-minute version of Memphis Slim's 'Everyday (I Have the Blues).' That was followed by blistering 12-minute workouts of King's own 'The Thrill Is Gone' and 'Rock Me Baby,' which both found Phish lead guitarist Trey Anastasio and King trading licks and solos. The set ended with an embrace between Anastasio and King, who walked off the stage to a standing ovation. Phish later returned to the stage for a second set and encore, completing an almost three-hour performance. The group is in the midst of its February arena tour, its first since returning from a two-year performing and recording hiatus. Phish plays Philadelphia's First Union Spectrum tonight. - Billboard

PAUL SIMON - Songwriter (2011)
Paul Simon Songwriter is a selection of songs, chosen by the composer, as the best of his decades-long creative output. Some of these are well-known hits and others more obscure works, but all bear the distinct lyrical, melodic and rhythmic signature of Paul Simon, one of the great composers of popular song in the last 50 years. As Simon has said, “I think of myself as a songwriter first, the recording artist and performer in me follow in the writer’s footsteps.” Simon brought his own unique perspective on the nuances of his catalog in the assemblage of Songwriter, a new anthology of his work handpicked and sequenced by the artist. The album includes an emotionally resonant rendition of “The Sound of Silence,” from Simon’s 2011 concert at New York’s Webster Hall and Aretha Franklin’s transcendent studio take on “Bridge Over Trouble Water” and other selections from the artist’s critically-acclaimed catalog of songs. Selecting the individual songs for Songwriter, from the hundreds he’s written and recorded, presented Paul Simon an opportunity to to reflect over the entirety of his career and showcase the individual songs best-exemplifying the high-points in his conversations with the muses, from his early work with Simon & Garfunkel through to his ruminations on the eternal now echoing across 2011's So Beautiful or So What.

BOB DYLAN - Pure Dylan: An Intimate Look at Bob Dylan (2011)
Bob Dylan has in the past 10 or 15 years experienced an amazing comeback: It appears since the 1997 album 'Time Out Of Mind' it simply, as he was the single greatest living artists of the rock era. He made a name for himself as an artist (Drawn Blank, Brazil Series), which in some of the best museums and galleries around the world issue (currently at the Gagosian Gallery in New York), - he wrote part one of his memoirs, turned with Masked And Anonymous a remarkable film, received a Pulitzer Prize, several Grammies, and his second honorary doctorate, surprised as a disc jockey with humor and encyclopedic knowledge of music (Bob's Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour) and reached with his albums suddenly chart positions and sales figures as in his best times in the 60s. And that he also nearly 70 years, is still even his longtime fans who think it all know, can surprise, he was two years ago, when he, from which one that now do not really expect was a Christmas album to say. In October / November Dylan completed as part of a large European tour with special guest Mark Knopfler eight large indoor concerts in our country - with a total of over 100,000 spectators, the German section of the European tour by far the largest audience. On the occasion of the Tour Sony Music Germany first got permission to bring out their own CD compilation.
'Pure Dylan: An Intimate Look at Bob Dylan' gathered at a dibasic packaged and yet lovingly compiled 78-minute-Digipak-CD, a series of rarely heard songs, which one are to be found on any of the many best of the man, nevertheless are among the best of what Dylan has recorded in the last 50 years. Including a number of rarities like the never released on CD 'Trouble In Mind' (with Mark Knopfler on guitar) or the rare, wonderful solo version of 'Spanish Is The Loving Tongue'. 17 songs, the show once again how important Dylan continues. CROSBY, STILLS & NASH - The Acoustic Concert (1991) @DVD AudioRip
The soaring, unmistakable harmonies of Crosby, Stills & Nash bring to life one classic song after another in Acoustic, the unique concert DVD of their greatest hits. This footage was captured live at San Francisco's Warfield Theater in November, 1991, and the intimate feeling of their pure acoustic music is simply magic. The New York Times music critic Robert Palmer once observed that CSN were 'acoustic folkies at heart.' Entertainment as pure as this will always be in style. CSN - artists for whom the word supergroup was invented. They brought together strands of distinctly different pop groups - David Crosby from the Byrds, Steven Stills from Buffalo Springfield, and Graham Nash from the Hollies - and wove a completely original sound. Ever since Crosby, Stills & Nash were catapulted into the spotlight at Woodstock, they've continued to charm millions of fans. Through two decades of incredible changes, their appeal has endured. As Graham Nash explained, 'One reason why people love this band is that there's an emotional connection between us and our audience. We've just tried to be true to ourselves.'

VINCE GILL - Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye (2000)
When most guys fall in love, only their families and close friends know how happy they are. With LET'S MAKE SURE WE KISS GOODBYE, Vince Gill lets the whole world know exactly how ecstatic he is. Gill wrote and recorded this album a few months before marrying singer Amy Grant, and he might as well have called it 'Vince & Amy 4-Ever.' In 11 out of the 12 tracks, Gill celebrates his love for Grant from every angle. In joyous, upbeat tracks like 'Feels Like Love' and 'Shoot Straight From Your Heart,' and in slower tunes like 'For the Last Time,' 'One' and the sexy 'Little Things,' he describes in detail how her love has healed him, uplifted him and made him a better person. Grant herself joins him in the duet 'When I Look Into Your Heart;' she also co-wrote one of the album's standouts, the soulful 'Look What Love's Revealing.' This outpouring of love only stops for the CD's touching final track, 'Hey God,' a tribute to the late golfer Payne Stewart. Despite its gushiness, 'Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye' is a typical high-quality Vince Gill album, just don't listen to it if your love life's not going well.
'Let's Make Sure We Kiss Goodbye' was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Album, 'Feels Like Love' was nominated for Best Male Country Vocal Performance, for Best Country Song and 'When I Look Into Your Heart' was nominated for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. - cduniverse.com

RARE EARTH - Discography 1968 - 1973
Rare Earth first came to the attention of the world as somewhat of an anomaly. Whereas a number of white acts spent the 50s stealing hit blues and soul songs and sanitizing them for pop audiences, Rare Earth largely made a career out of taking hit Motown songs and giving them an even funkier rock sound - and doing it as Motown's first major white act. Formed in Detroit in the mid 60s by drummer Peter Rivera, saxophonist Gil Bridges, bassist John Parrish, guitarist Rod Richards and keyboardist Kenny James, Rare Earth was playing the local bar scene and had released one minor album (Dreams/Answers) when they were signed by Motown. Berry Gordy and company had enough faith that they created a Rare Earth label around the group. Rare Earth scored a surprise first hit on its Motown debut with an infectious, rocked-out version of the Temptations' 'Get Ready.' The single and the accompanying album hit the Pop and Soul top twenty.
The group went back to the well again the next year with its album Ecology and the hit remake of '(I Know I'm) Losing You,' another cut from the Tempts catalog. The group's third album yielded perhaps its most popular single, the Dino Fekaris composition 'I Just Want to Celebrate,' a fantastic blend of bar rock and funky soul that hit the top 10. Rare Earth remained pretty prolific over the next several years, but the members' own compositions didn't click with audiences as their remakes had. After a few more albums on Motown they moved to the Prodigal Records label for a handful of discs, but failed to generate much interest. - soultracks.com

V.A. - Johnny Boy Would Love This: A Tribute To John Martyn (2011)
Long a revered and influential figure in Britain, late great folk-rock songsmith John Martyn has remained a cult favourite this side of the Atlantic. No surprise then that, aside from the notable likes of Joe Bonamassa, Vetiver and Clarence Fountain and Sam Butler (Blind Boys of Alabama), the line-up on this double CD tribute set is primarily British. Such albums are inevitably uneven, but the success rate here is pleasingly high. It's hard to screw up material this musically and lyrically rich. Notable names include Beth Orton, David Gray, Beck, the Swell Season, Paolo Nutini, Vashti Bunyan and Morcheeba, and they turn in expectedly high-quality versions, with Orton and Beck shining brightest. A highlight is Robert Smith's take on 'Small Hours,' sesting Martyn may well have been an influence on the Cure's moody sound. Martyn's pioneering, atmospheric, dub-inflected work in the '70s is similarly now viewed as a progenitor of the trip-hop style. After a promising start, Snow Patrol stumble on signature Martyn tune 'May You Never,' by over-reaching for the epic, something Martyn never did. Phil Collins may have been a close friend and Martyn career booster, but his contribution ('Tearing and Breaking') is typically banal. Quite a few lesser-known artists appear, with those impressing including Ted Barnes, Lisa Hannigan and Syd Kitchen. A worthwhile tribute, especially if it encourages more people to check out Martyn's rich catalogue (such as Solid Air and One World).
DISC 1: 01. Let The Good Things Come - David Gray 02. Glorious Fool - Clarence Fountain & Sam Butler (Formely Of Blind Boys Of Alabama) 03. Small Hours - Robert Smith (Cure) 04. DISC 2: 01. May You Never - Snow Patrol 02. Go Down Easy - Beth Orton 03. Fairytale Lullaby - Bombay Bicycle Club 04. Fine Lines - Syd Kitchen 05. Head And Heart - Vashti Bunyan 06. SLADE - Sladest (1973) [Remastered 2011]
Originally released in the UK in September 1973, Sladest emulated recent Slade singles by going straight to the top of the charts. After relinquishing the summit and hovering around the Top Ten towards the end of the year, it climbed back up to the Number One spot in early 1974 in the wake of the huge success of their next single Merry Xmas Everybody. That seasonal smash wasn’t included on the album, but Sladest did contain all of Slade’s hits up to that point, as well as several singles released prior to their chart breakthrough and a handful of tracks from their underrated second album (released late in 1970), Play It Loud.
Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1973 collection from the British Glam rockers featuring four bonus tracks including a previously unreleased studio version of 'Hear Me Calling'. Comes with the original gatefold LP packaging carefully reproduced. Includes no less than five UK #1 hits. 16-page booklet includes new sleeve notes by respected scribe and Slade aficionado Chris Ingham incorporating new interviews with Dave Hill and Don Powell. - amazon.com

STEVE WINWOOD - Solo albums 1977 - 1986
Stephen Lawrence 'Steve' Winwood is an English international recording artist whose career spans nearly 50 years. He is a songwriter and a musician whose genres include soul music (blue-eyed soul), R&B, rock, blues-rock, pop-rock, and jazz. Winwood is a multi-instrumentalist who plays the electric organ, synthesizers, bass, drums, guitar, mandolin, violin and other stringed instruments. His trademark style is singing in a tenor voice and playing the Hammond organ. In addition to his solo career, he was a key member of the bands the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith and Go. Winwood has won numerous Grammy Awards in the United States of America.
In 2008, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Winwood #33 in its 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. In 2005, Winwood was honored as a BMI Icon at the annual BMI London Awards for his 'enduring influence on generations of music makers.
Weariness with the grind of touring and recording prompted Winwood to leave Traffic and retire to sessioning for some years. Under pressure from Island Records, he resurfaced with his self-titled first solo album in 1977. This was followed by his 1980 hit 'Arc of a Diver' (which included his first solo hit, While You See A Chance) and 'Talking Back to the Night in' 1982. Both albums were recorded at his home in Gloucestershire with Winwood playing all instruments. In 1986, he enlisted the help of a coterie of stars to record 'Back in the High Life' in the US, and the album was a hit. He topped the Billboard Hot 100 with 'Higher Love', and earned two Grammy Awards: for Record of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

PAUL BUTTERFIELD'S BETTER DAYS - Better Days (1973) [Limited Edition, Original recording remastered, 2007, Japan]
Following the releases of Live in 1970 and Sometimes I Just Feel Like Smiling in 1971, Butterfield broke up the horn band with David Sanborn and Dinwiddie, and returned to Woodstock, New York. He formed a new group including Chris Parker on drums, guitarist Amos Garrett, Geoff Muldaur, pianist Ronnie Barron and bassist Billy Rich, naming the ensemble 'Better Days.'
'We're the only band around that's playing rooted American music,' Better Days vocalist and former folkie Geoff Muldaur told an interviewer when this album was first released in 1973, and with perhaps just a handful of exceptions he was right. The band's mix of various styles of blues, from rural (Robert Johnson), to cosmopolitan (Percy Mayfield), along with hints of New Orleans R&B, boogie woogie, and early rock and country, was tremendously out of step with the pop trends of its time. These days, of course, there are many bands doing more or less the same thing (although rarely as well), but the fact that these guys couldn't have cared less about appearing trendy is one of the reasons why BETTER DAYS sounds timeless. Another reason, of course, is world class musicianship; Muldaur, Paul Butterfield, and stupendously stylish guitarist Amos Garrett in particular come across as both relaxed and passionate. Despite their essentially formalistic approach to music making, they never sound academic or sterile. BETTER DAYS is one of the great lost albums of the '70s. - amazon.com

KASEY CHAMBERS - Storybook (2011)
2011 album from the Australian singer/songwriter, a collection of songs that inspired her to become a musician. 'It was exciting to be a human jukebox for this record,' she confesses, 'to get the chance to record the songs I love.' One of the darkest songs to ever scale the pop charts, Suzanne Vega's 'Luka' is the first single from Storybook and has been a personal favorite of Kasey's since she first heard it on release in 1987. Kasey also works her magic on gutsy, soulful tunes hand-picked from the songbooks of Paul Kelly, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Fred Eaglesmith, Patty Griffin and many others. These are songs with a fair bit of grit in their grooves, populated by very real, very human characters. - cduniverse.com

CHRIS DUARTE GROUP - Blues In The Afterburner (2011)
When some of Chris Duarte's admirers exalted him as 'the new Stevie Ray Vaughan' back in the '90s, it was unfair to Duarte as well as to Vaughan's memory. Vaughan was irreplaceable, and expecting Duarte to somehow fill the void that Vaughan left when he died in 1990 is unrealistic. That said, Duarte has made some exciting contributions to blues-rock -- specifically, blues-rock of the Texas variety, and that Lone Star spirit is alive and well on Blues in the Afterburner. Texas, of course, has been a leader in different areas of the blues. Lightnin' Hopkins, Texas Alexander, and Blind Lemon Jefferson are among the icons of pre-rock Texas blues, while the recordings of Vaughan and Johnny Winter are the essence of loud-and-proud Texas blues-rock. Texas has a proud history when it comes to the blues, so why shouldn't Duarte wear his Lone Star heritage like a badge of honor? And that is exactly what he does on this 2011 release. The San Antonio native/Austin resident is as Texas-sounding on 'Hold Back the Tears,' 'Make Me Feel So Right,' and 'Searching for You' as he is on 'I've Been a Fool' and 'Black Clouds Rolling,' which is not to say that all of his influences are from Texas. Duarte maintains some Jimi Hendrix influence (Hendrix was from Seattle, not Texas) along with his fondness for Vaughan and Winter, but then, Hendrix was also a major influence on Vaughan. And true to form, Duarte is as expressive with his vocals as he is with his electric guitar playing. Blues in the Afterburner is another memorable, inspired album from Duarte. ~ cduniverse.com

V.A. - Rodentia:The Best Of Dark Roots Music (2008) + The Best Of Dark Roots Music Vol.2 - 4 (2010)
Undoubtedly the biggest assembly of dark roots artists on one album; Rodentia: The Best of Dark Roots Music features 34 Tracks on two discs featuring the best dark roots music the world has to offer. Established mainstays in the genre such as O'death, Reverend Glasseye, Those Poor Bastards, Botanica, and Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys can all be found alongside emerging artists such as Uncle Sinner and Oldboy. Carefully arranged for the listener to explore the variety of music contained inside, Rodentia is intended a marathon two hour listening session to explore the world of dark roots music. - amazon.com
Just in time for the end of the gloomy season, the folks at Devil’s Ruin Records are preparing to release their continuation of the Dark Roots Music compilation series, with not one but three more volumes: II. Rodentagogue, III. Rodenticide, and IV. Rodentum. Though the new additions aren’t quite as extensive as their predecessor, Rodentia: The Best of Dark Roots Music, the two-disc release that spawned the series, the content is equally impressive. Then again, while each of the new releases are home to between fourteen and eighteen tracks, Rodentia featured thirty-four songs by thirty-four of today’s finest roots bands and singer/songwriters, such as Strawfoot, O’Death, Black River Brethren, Reverend Glasseye, The Dad Horse Experience, Uncle Sinner, and Those Poor Bastards. The three new volumes, however, feature a number of different artists, some on Devil’s Ruin Records, some not. On Rodentagogue, Volume II, you will hear songs from the likes of JB Nelson, Munly & The Lupercalians, and The Sad Bastard Book Club. On Volume II, Rodenticide, you will hear songs by Black Jake & The Carnies, The Resurrectionists, Sean K. Preston, The .357 String Band, and Rainer Hass. And on Rodentum, Volume IV, you will hear songs by Dimestore Troubadours, Murder by Death, Pete Yorko, Muzza Monroe & The Lushous Strings, and JB Nelson & The Chainsaws. These are some of the most well compiled volumes of roots music I have ever encountered, with some of the best gothic americana, gypsy, insugent country, bluegrass, hillbilly troubadour, blues trash, and neo-folk bands and singer/songwriters to be found in modern underground music.

GURF MORLIX - Diamonds To Dust (2007)
Gurf Morlix is a guitarist/producer probably best known for his collaborations with Lucinda Williams, although he also has worked with folks like Robert Earl Keen, Ian McLagan, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and Buddy & Julie Miller. The busy Austin-based musician doesn't get a lot of time to do his solo work, with Diamonds to Dust being just his fourth album; however, it is his strongest overall effort. A sense of morality courses through this disc, starting with the powerful prison-cell set opener, 'Killin' Time in Texas.' On 'Madalyn's Bones,' he explores the mysterious death of the atheist leader Madalyn Murray O'Hair, while 'Food, Water, Shelter & Love' offers his stark take on the Hurricane Katrina tragedy. Death plays a central role, too, in the haunting 'Windows Open, Windows Close,' which refers to the late Texas songwriter Blaze Foley, as well as in the spare and stirring 'Blanket,' a tune partially inspired by Warren Zevon's death. 'Blanket' is also one of the tunes that features Patty Griffin's harmony singing; her gorgeous soaring voice provides a nice contrast to Morlix's more earthbound vocals. His parched voice, however, does lend an appropriate world-weariness to his cover of Dylan's 'With God on Our Side.' The title track, a roots rock workout, offers more dark ruminations, but Morlix includes some wry fatalism ('Birth to boneyard/Boon to bust/Everything falls apart when it must'). His dark sense of humor surfaces later in the disc on a delightfully twisted love song, 'Worth Dyin' For.' Although the disc maintains a dark mood, it isn't pitch black. The simple bluesy 'I've Got a Passion' offers a bit of hope through the power of love. The disc closer, 'Need You Now,' is an even stronger love song, although this heartfelt plea to a missing lover can't be called an uplifting tune. This song, along with the rattling ramshackle blues of 'Up Against It,' number among the tracks that evoke his times with Lucinda Williams. For someone who is a sought-after guitarist, Morlix never resorts to showboating. He colors 'Up Against It' with some roadhouse bluesiness without slipping into meandering soloing. Similarly, his swampy guitar work enhances the noir-ish mystery of 'Madalyn's Bones.' Somewhat bleak but thoroughly compelling, Diamonds to Dust is a rough-hewn little gem of Americana. - allmusic.com

V.A. - Blues & Soul Sessions (2002)
There's much superior blues and soul music on this 30-song, two-CD set, but its focus is blurry to the point of mystery. Are these tracks fusions of blues and soul, a la artists like Bobby Bland and Little Milton? Not exactly, though a few of the numbers fit that description. Is it bluesy soul, soulful blues, or a combination of the two? Sometimes, but by no means always. It's more a collection that mixes soul cuts with blues cuts, covering, roughly speaking, the last half of the century, though it centers more around the period of soul's '60s/early-'70s heyday than it does anything else. It's a real hodgepodge of well-known recordings (John Lee Hooker's 'Boom Boom,' Jimmy Reed's 'Bright Lights, Big City,' Bob & Earl's 'Harlem Shuffle,' Young-Holt Unlimited's 'The In Crowd/Wade in the Water'); obscure cuts by well-known artists (including Aretha Franklin, Billy Preston, Booker T. & the MG's, Little Richard, the Staple Singers, LaVern Baker, Major Lance, Ike & Tina Turner, and Tyrone Davis); famous songs, but not in their original versions or most-noted interpretations (Erma Franklin doing 'Hold on I'm Coming,' Peggy Scott singing 'Every Little Bit Hurts,' Buddy Guy and Jeff Beck dueting on 'Mustang Sally,' Bobby Womack radically reworking a song he co-wrote, 'It's All Over Now'); and just plain fill-up-the-space obscurities (Just Brothers' instrumental 'Sliced Tomatoes'). There's some amiable but rather modern blues from the likes of Lil' Ed & the Blues Imperials, and even traditional field-recorded blues from Vera Hall. There are a few, though not many, outstanding songs you'll have a hard time coming across on other reissues, like Floyd Smith's dramatic, moody soul ballad 'Getting Nowhere Fast.' It's a little like listening to a radio show specializing in blues and soul, and while it's hardly a bad assortment, it's not something that could be considered either a sturdy building block of or purposeful supplement to a comprehensive soul and/or blues record collection. The absence of liner notes or (for many of the tracks) original recording/release dates don't help. - allmusic.com

Over her years Sharrie has had the opportunity to collaborate with national recording artists such as Larry McCray and Ron Prince. CAROLYN WONDERLAND - Peace Meal (2011)
To her credit, Carolyn Wonderland makes no bones about the Janis Joplin comparisons that, somewhat accurately, describe her whiskey-soaked voice and tough blues/soul musical palette. In fact, this album's opening track is a relatively obscure Joplin cover of 'What Good Can Drinkin' Do' that she delivers with requisite bad girl swagger. Well known for her exciting live show, Wonderland has had less success capturing that edge on album. But a combination of producers including Asleep at the Wheel's Ray Benson, Dylan sideman Larry Campbell, and even ex-Monkee Mike Nesmith successfully frame the Texas native's songs in a raw, rootsy, but professionally recorded environment that lets her vocals shine and gives her band room to kick out the jams on blues, R&B, New Orleans funk, swamp rock, and the righteous gospel that's at the heart of her multiple influences. The tracks are divided equally between covers and Wonderland originals, thereby displaying both her songwriting and interpretive chops. She can wail with the best of them, but it's her control on tunes such as 'Usurper,' with its thumping drums, and the closing acoustic country of 'Shine On,' the album's most reserved moment, that shows the restraint of a great singer. She brings churchy soul to her own 'St. Marks,' an easygoing midtempo rocker that sounds like an old soul cover, and tears it up on blues classics such as Elmore James' 'Dust My Broom' and 'Two Trains,' applying the latter's words to the standard 'You Don't Love Me' riff. She's obviously on fire performing straight-ahead blues, her band is rocking, and the arrangement balances her in-your-face blast with a far more subtle style. It's that ability to rein in her brassy bellow, especially on a fiery gospel take of Vince Welnick/Robert Hunter's 'Golden Stairs' (a cool, under-the-radar find), that makes her such a formidable presence and provides this album the dynamics of style and mood that make it a diverse yet perfect example of what Wonderland does best. - allmusic.com

SANDY DENNY - Listen Listen: An Introduction To Sandy Denny (1999)
Island's single-disc Sandy Denny compilation does its best to offer a compact overview of the iconic singer's work. Focusing on the four records completed before her death in 1978, the 17-track 'Listen Listen' winds comfortably through career highlights like 'The North Star Grassman and the Raven,' 'Blackwaterside,' and the gorgeous title track. Fans will contest the omission of tracks like 'Carnival' and 'It Suits Me Well,' but for such a slim collection - considering Denny's invaluable work with Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, and the Strawbs - 'Listen Listen' is a fine introduction to the artist's later days. Fans and non-fans alike would do better to pick up 2000's excellent double-disc career-spanning 'No More Sad Refrains: The Anthology'. -cduniverse.com

KIKI DEE - The Best Of Kiki Dee (2009)
Kiki Dee is an English singer with a career spanning more than 40 years. She is best known for her 1976 duet with Elton John, entitled 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart', which went to Number 1 both in the UK Singles Chart and the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 1993 she performed another duet with Elton John for his Duets album, a cover version of Cole Porter's 'True Love', which reached #2 in the UK.
Kiki Dee kicked around Britain as a white soul singer for the better part of the late '60s and early '70s - even becoming the first British Caucasian signed to Motown - before hooking up with Elton John, who signed her to his Rocket Records label and produced her first notable hit, 'I've Got the Music in Me.' In 1976, at which time John was the biggest pop star in the world, he wrote and duetted with Dee on the single 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart,' which promptly topped the charts all over the world. It did not, however, make Dee a long-term star, though she scored a couple of subsequent hits in England and turned to the stage with some success, especially by starring in Blood Brothers in the West End. In 1993, she and John recorded another duet, on Cole Porter's 'True Love' (previously recorded as a duet by Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly). - allmusic.com

POST OF THE WEEK:
V.A. - Cameo Parkway 1957-1967 [Box set, Original recording remastered] (2005)
Nervous and retiring, Bernie Lowe hardly seemed the stuff of an indie-label pioneer. But when the musician and former music-school teacher teamed up with former student/strling comedy writer Kal Mann in a fledgling songwriting partnership that eventually saw Elvis score with their 'Teddy Bear,' the die was cast. The pair had launched Cameo the previous year in Lowe's Philadelphia basement, showing a quick knack for scoring chart success with MOR pop (Charlie Grace's 'Butterfly'), novelty kitsch (Zacherle's 'Cool Ghoul'), and teen-idol rock (Bobby Rydell and others)--the latter thanks largely to serving as talent farm/bullpen for Dick Clark's then Philly-based American Bandstand. But it was Chubby Checker's era-defining dance smash 'The Twist' that saw the label's fortunes soar (still the only record to claw its way to the top of the charts in two different years). This generous, 115-track, four-disc anthology of the label's long out-of-print catalog details those highlights and more, wending its way through even unlikelier novelty fare (Clint Eastwood's rasping tribute to his Rawhide TV character, 'Rowdy'; RFK impersonator 'Senator Bobby' orating a dizzy cover of the Troggs' 'Wild Thing') to such '60s garage-rock staples as ? and the Mysterians' classic '96 Tears,' the first American release by the Kinks, and promising early sides by Bob Seger. --Jerry McCulley
The first comprehensive compilation of releases on Philadelphia's legendary Cameo Parkway label, whose hits dominated the independent music market for several years during a golden era of pop music. OSCAR BENTON - Greatest Hits (2000)
Ferdinand van Eif (a.k.a. Oscar Benton) was born in 3 February 1949, Dutch blues vocalist and guitarist. The song Bensonhurst Blues, written by Artie Kaplan & Artie Kornfeld, was originally released by Oscar Benton in his 1970 homonymous album. This version was part of the soundtrack of the 1999 movie La Buche. Earlier it was on the soundtrack of the film Pour la Peau d’un Flic which features Alain Delon. Another version is that by Artie Kaplan in his 1973 album Confessions Of A Male Chauvinist Pig. The Italian singer Adriano Celentano, in his 2004 album C’é Sempre un Motivo, included an Italian version, named Vengo del Jazz. A famous Romanian singer, Margareta Paslaru, sings it in Romanian under the title Spuneam Ca Nu-Mi Passa (Bui Bui Bui). Needless to add here, none of the other versions manages to catch up with Oscar Benton’s original version. Oscar Benton is certainly a much greater artist than what he is known, and I am committeed to uncover to the others as much as I can of his greatness… Indeed, he’s a poetic singer whom I would rather qualify as a scion of George Brassens, Charles Aznavour, and Enrico Macias.

MUDDY WATERS, JOHNNY WINTER & JAMES COTTON - Breakin' It Up, Breakin' It Down (2007)
Breakin' it Up, Breakin' it Down was approximately one foot and a few days away from being lost forever. Seriously... how does that stuff happen? Several soot-covered boxes of recording tape – many labelled with Muddy Waters' name – were nearly thrown away after being more or less abandoned by the now-defunct Blue Sky label. Fortunately, not only were these boxes saved but the music contained therein is finding its way into the hands of blues lovers the world over. The first gold mined from those boxes came in the form of the deluxe edition of Muddy “Mississippi” Waters Live. That album was originally released as a single LP. A second disc, consisting of material excavated from these boxes, was appended to the set when it was re-released in 2003. Breakin' it Up is the latest treasure to be excavated from what was almost trashed. Breakin' it Up, Breakin' it Down marks the first time the 11 songs on this live album have been released. The songs are taken from three March 1977 shows from the Hard Again tour. Those shows were the March 4 show at The Palladium in New York, the March 6 Tower Theatre show in Upper Darby, PA, and the March 18 show at The Masonic Temple Theatre in Detroit.

It is not necessarily a definitive introduction, but rather a good sampler of his mature work.

JERRY GARCIA - Garcia Plays Dylan (2005)
Given that Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead were no strangers (see 1989's DYLAN & THE DEAD live album), it's not surprising that the late Jerry Garcia frequently covered the rock bard in concert, with both the Dead and other ensembles. This two-disc set collects 15 of Garcia's live takes on Dylan songs recorded at various shows between 1973 and 1995. Garcia's love of the extended jam is on full display here, with many of these renditions transforming Dylan's folk/rock classics into lengthy instrumental workouts, particularly on the positively swingin' 12-minute take on 'Tangled Up in Blue' and the 17-minute-plus 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door,' which moves from a slow, melancholy opening to a soulful, uplifting finale. Jerry will always be known for his resonant and distinctive versions of songs by his friend and fellow icon Bob Dylan. Whether with the JGB or the Dead, Garcia's interpretations of the Dylan canon are rich renditions that embody the very soul of American roots music. This two-disc collection gathers over two hours of unreleased performances from the vaults, including 'I Shall Be Released', 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door', and 'Tangled Up In Blue'. V.A. - The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams (2011)
Created from writings left behind by country music's 'lovesick blues boy,' The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams premieres the first-ever performances of 12 previously unheard Hank Williams lyric compositions newly set to music by 13 artists whose own sensibilities have been profoundly shaped by Williams. The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams project began with the idea of finding a well-known artist, one who felt Hank's inspiration and influence, to record an album's worth of the unheard songs. After veteran music industry manager/A&R executive Mary Martin approached Bob Dylan, a natural first choice for the endeavor, the project evolved into a multi-artist tribute providing a variety of sympathetic approaches to this rich mysterious material. Other artists appearing on the album include Jack White, Norah Jones, Lucinda Williams, Alan Jackson and many more.

DON AIREY - All Out (2011)
While the fans are still hoping and waiting for a new DEEP PURPLE studio album, most of the current band members release solo stuff or team up with other musicians for album projects: Ian Gillan joined forces with Tony Iommi to record two songs under the “Who Cares”-banner, Steve Morse teamed up with singer/songwriter Sarah Spencer to form “Angelfire” and Roger Glover revivied the Guilty Party to release “If Life Was Easy”. Don Airey, not only playing on several third party albums also finished “All Out”, his second solo release since the latest PURPLE output “Rapture of the Deep”. While “A Light In The Sky” used travelling through space and time as theme, “All Out” does the travel music-wise. The songs capture the mood, sounds and feelings of different points in time - the instrumental “Estancia” reminds of a modernized Emerson, Lake and Palmer while the inclusion of Bernie Marsden on “Running From The Shadows” brings some WHITESNAKE memories. “People In Your Head” offers another special guest - this time it’s Joe Bonamassa. Two songs however fail to convince: the first is the Jimmy Hendrix cover “Fire” where the organ just doesn’t fit the overall picture while “Tobruk” gets lost somewhere within its ten minutes. With most songs sounding different than their neightbours, “All Out” offers a lot to discover but also leaves a feeling of being “just a bunch of songs” instead of something more monolithic. A good rock album - nothing less and nothing more. - thehighwaystar.com

LAURA NYRO - New York Tendaberry (1969) [2002 Expanded Edition]
Though Laura Nyro was one of the most successful American songwriters of the late '60s, penning hits like Streisand's 'Stoney End,' Blood, Sweat & Tears' 'And When I Die,' Three Dog Night's 'Eli's Coming,' and the Fifth Dimension's 'Wedding Bell Blues,' her buoyant, genre-blending major-label debut clicked with only a small, if influential, cult audience. But even Nyro's faithful must have been taken by surprise by its 1969 follow-up. A mature, deeply impressionistic ode to her hometown, New York City, Nyro's creation captures the city's multicultural soul and emotionally jagged edges so well it's hard to believe this 22-year-old daughter of a jazz musician who couldn't read a note of music concocted it. Stripping her music down to the bare essentials of her expressive, occasionally explosive soprano and fervent piano work somehow expanded its dramatic potential exponentially. Indeed, there are few pop albums whose protominimalist use of studio flourishes and production sheen have been as brief or effective; Nyro called them 'colors,' and that's exactly the function they serve here, adding crucial glimmer to the stark, jazzy drama of the singer's evocative songs. The bonus, 'Save the Country,' cut as a full studio production prior to Nyro rethinking the approach, fairly blares by comparison. Rooted in the singer's beloved '50s R&B and pop, yet infused with her brave, singular vision and the chutzpah to stick to it, this album remains Nyro's masterpiece. - amazon.com

THE BABYS - The Babys (1976) & Broken Heart (1977) [2008, Remaster]
The Babys were a British rock/pop group best known for their songs 'Isn't It Time,' and 'Every Time I Think of You.' Both songs were composed by Jack Conrad and Ray Kennedy, and reached #13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in the late 1970s. The 1976–1978 Babys line-up consisted of vocalist/bassist John Waite, drummer Tony Brock, keyboard player/guitarist Michael Corby and guitarist Wally Stocker. The Babys Archives makes a very strong case against the name being used after the charismatic Corby and Millar were sacked, as the original contract clearly has Corby as a member and never lists Cain and Phillips. Corby commissioned The Babys Archives a number of years ago to correct a number of misconceptions about the origins of the group.
This two-fer from One Way features a pair of out-of-print Babys LPs: Babys and Broken Heart. Originally issued in 1976 and 1977, respectively, each of the 20 tracks has a continuity dominated by mainstream arena rock. Highlights Include 'Silver Dreams,' 'Isn't It Time,' and 'Over and Over.' This is an enjoyable reissue from the Babys early catalog on Chrysalis Records, but most listeners would be better served with Anthology. UK Power pop act The Babys found chart success in both the USA & UK from 1977 made the us Top 200. . Digitally remastered 2 LP 's on 1 CD. All tracks are digitally remastered. - cduniverse.com

V.A. - Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues: A Musical Journey (2003)
Five-CD deluxe boxed set includes a comprehensive collection of the music from the seven films airing on PBS. A definitive overview of blues, from its earliest recordings over 80 years ago, to contemporary artists and new recordings made specifically for The Blues. Music from the PBS Series The Blues, executive produced by acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese.
This is by far the best and most comprehensive introduction to recorded blues ever assembled, drawing styles, record labels, and eras together with the efficiency of a spider’s web. These five discs-tied to the hit-and-miss PBS film series Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues-embrace field hollers, early queens Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, the music’s first composer W.C. Handy, Delta slide guitarists, string bands, piano barrelhousers, jazz geniuses Count Basie and Lionel Hampton, Texas hotshots, lyric poets Percy Mayfield and Willie Dixon, Chicago powerhouses from Muddy Waters to Buddy Guy, Howlin’ Wolf and howling white boys, soulkittens Etta James and Janis Joplin, juke joint brawlers like Hound Dog Taylor, African torchbearer Ali Farka Toure, modern guitar heroes Stevie Ray Vaughan and Luther Allison, and even recent hit-makers Peggy Scott-Adams and Susan Tedeschi. And that’s just a smidgen of the talents represented across more than 100 cuts. Nonetheless, there are grave omissions in disc five, which focuses on contemporary blues. The raw electric sound of present-day Mississippi, embodied by R.L. Burnside and other artists on the Fat Possum label, has done much to open the ears of college-age audiences and should be included. Also absent are the music’s most important contemporary innovators: Afro-blues fusionist Corey Harris, psychedelic folk bluesman Otis Taylor and rap-blues proselytizer Chris Thomas King. Still, it’s obvious this collection is a work of devotion and intelligence as well as commerce. - amazon.com

BUDDY GUY - Damn Right, I've Got The Blues [Expanded Edition] (2005)
This guest-studded CD relaunched Buddy Guy's career and set him toward the pinnacle of contemporary blues. Despite turns from Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, and others, it's Guy who burns brightest and loudest. He delivers roaring, exuberant performances of classic R&B ('Mustang Sally'), old-time blues ('Black Night'), and house rockers ('Where Is the Next One Coming From'). Most poignant, though, is his seven-minute instrumental 'Rememberin' Stevie,' which not only rekindles the fiery spirit of his own youth, but pays sensitive tribute to his late friend and admirer Stevie Ray Vaughan. This is the blueprint for Guy's current performing style.
To celebrate Buddy Guy’s newest and bluest accolade, Silvertone Records is pleased to announce the Expanded Edition of his breakthrough Grammy-winning, gold-certified release, Damn Right, I’ve Got The Blues (Best Contemporary Blues Album). This special edition includes 2 tracks previously unavailable in the U.S. – in fact, formerly released as b-sides in the U.K. The album cover will be true to the original, but beautifully enhanced with a special silver background. As another added bonus, Damn Right, I’ve Got The Blues, Expanded Edition will feature brand new liner notes from none other than Anthony DeCurtis, the Rolling Stone editor and writer at large. - amazon.com

LAURA NYRO - Live At The Bottom Line (1989)
Laura: Live at the Bottom Line is the second live album by New York-born singer, songwriter, and pianist Laura Nyro and her tenth original album in total, including the 1977 live album Season of Lights. Nyro's long-time label Columbia Records wanted a brand new studio album from Nyro, who had stayed with the label despite not having had a reasonable commercial success for well over a decade. Instead, she decided she wanted to go on the road and record a new live album. Columbia did not approve, and a deal was negotiated allowing Nyro to release the live album on a different label, Cypress, before returning to Columbia for another studio album. Live at the Bottom Line was recorded at New York's famous intimate venue, the Bottom Line, and mixes some of Nyro's famous compositions with newer ones and also previously unreleased songs. The album was not a commercial success, however, and Nyro would not release another live album during her lifetime. - wikipedia

Laura Nyro (October 18, 1947 – April 8, 1997) was an American songwriter, singer, and pianist. She achieved considerable critical acclaim with own recordings, particularly the albums Eli and the Thirteenth Confession and New York Tendaberry, and had commercial success with artists such as Barbra Streisand and The 5th Dimension recording her songs. Her style was a hybrid of Brill Building-style New York pop, jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues, show tunes, rock and soul.

BOTTLE ROCKETS - Live In Heilbronn, Germany, July 17, 2005 (2006)
The Bottle Rockets are an American rock band formed in 1992, currently based in St. Louis, Missouri. The founding members are Brian Henneman (guitar, vocals), Mark Ortmann (drums), Tom Parr (1992–2002, guitar, vocals) and Tom Ray (1992–1997, bass guitar). Current members are Henneman, Ortmann, John Horton (joined 2003, guitar) and Keith Voegele (joined 2005, bass, vocals). Most members of the group have contributed compositions to their catalog of original songs, as have Robert Parr (Tom's brother) and schoolteacher Scott Taylor (who writes lyrics for some of Henneman's tunes). As noted in the New York Times by William Hogeland, the Bottle Rockets' songwriting has been likened to Woody Guthrie's folk style in spirit, smarts, and satire. The band's lyrics encapsulate the common experiences of the everyman, and are set to rousing and searing rock 'n' roll. Considered to be the leaders of the '90s alt-country/roots rock revival along with peers Uncle Tupelo, the Bottle Rockets are contemporary storytellers from Middle America.Their songs with strong social commentary reflect their influences of Woody Guthrie, Neil Young and The Replacements. - wikipedia
'Back before the Drive-By Truckers got it in gear, when Ryan Adams was still settling in Whiskeytown, the Bottle Rockets were setting off musical M-80s as perhaps the most underappreciated roots-rock/Americana band of the mid-'90s... this current edition of the Bottle Rockets is both musically and thematically, a great American rock band.' —Reuters/Hollywood Reporter

JUNIOR BROWN - The Austin Experience: Live At The Continental Club (2005)
Junior Brown, the multi-dimensional Americana/honkytonk artist who dazzled fans in 2004 with his Telarc debut, Down Home Chrome, ratchets up the intensity with Live At The Continental Club: The Austin Experience, a richly layered set that captures the witty songcraft and mind-bending fretwork that have become his trademark in the live setting. Recorded at The Continental Club in Austin, Texas, in April of 2005, the album captures Junior in front of a wildly appreciative audience in one of the most musically rich towns in the fifty states. Armed with his unique Guit-steel—an otherworldly double-necked machine that marries the six-stringed guitar with its steel counterpart—Brown blasts through twelve tracks that mix the best of country, blues, Tex-Mex, Western swing, rock and roll and countless other shades of electrified American music. The result is a high-octane rollercoaster ride that careens from one emotional touchstone to another—from the rollicking to the poignant to the humorous and beyond. Live At The Continental Club: The Austin Experience is a window into the rare and riveting experience of Junior Brown in front of a live audience. More than just a string of entertaining songs—and that would be enough where Junior’s concerned—it’s an ear-opening journey with a few surprises along the way. Wherever your point of origin—north or south, rock and roll or country, edgy or genteel—this recording will pull you out of your chair, put the shake in your shoes, and quite possibly dismantle every preconception you’ve ever held about music in general. - concordmusicgroup.com

TERRY ALLEN & THE PANHANDLE MYSTERY BAND - Smokin' the Dummy / Bloodlines (1996)
Long before there were the '90s genre descriptions of 'alt.country' or 'y'allternative,' there was Terry Allen and the Panhandle Mystery Band. A 1997 reissue of two mid-'80s albums on Allen's own Fate label, SMOKIN' THE DUMMY/BLOODLINES is a twisted melange of folk, jazz, country, pop, Tex-Mex polkas, and Allen's own trademark skewed lyrical viewpoint, best exemplified in the Chuck Berry-inspired 'Whatever Happened to Jesus and Maybellene?' and the cheerfully heretical 'Gimme a Ride to Heaven, Boy!' On the later, a driver picks up a hitchhiker who turns out to be Jesus, who promptly pistol-whips and carjacks the poor guy, leaving him with the hilarious and strangely chilling line 'The Lord moves in mysterious ways and tonight, my son, he's gonna use your car.' The Panhandle Mystery Band, featuring Allen's longtime compatriots Lloyd Maines and Don Caldwell, whip up a sound that's somewhere between Little Feat and Brave Combo. These albums are essential art-country. - cdunoverse.com

DAN BAIRD - Buffalo Nickel (1996)
Daniel 'Dan' John Baird is an American singer-songwriter, musician and producer. He is best known as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist from the chart-topping 80s rock band The Georgia Satellites. Baird formed The Georgia Satellites in 1980 and left the band in 1990, to pursue a successful solo career. He is often credited as a pioneer in Cowpunk and Alt-country music, which combines elements of Rock with Country, outlaw country and punk rock. Dan Baird and his producer, Brendan O'Brien, trade noisy guitar licks on another set of gutbucket rock & roll tunes. Baird's approach is so basic it borders on the , except when he comes up with striking lyrics to supplement the simple sound, such as on the album-opening 'Younger Face,' a Dylanish complaint about 'another five and dime would-be local legend' who 'has come to take your place' (or maybe to take Baird's, unless he can distinguisb himself from the pack a little more often). There is also a nice cover of the old Deep Purple hit 'Hush' that features songwriter Joe South on 'na na's, hushes and good love's.' ~ All Music Guide

AUDIENCE - The House On The Hill (1971)
Audience is a cult British art rock band which existed between 1969 and 1972, and reformed in 2004. The original band consisted of Howard Werth on nylon-strung electric acoustic guitar and vocals, Keith Gemmell on tenor sax, flute and clarinet, bass guitarist and vocalist Trevor Williams and drummer/vocalist Tony Connor. 'The House on the Hill' is maybe Audience's strongest effort, made up of simple, elegantly arranged songs, focusing around Howard Werth's 'electric classical' guitar and Keith Gemmel's tenor sax and clarinet. 'Jackdaw' has Werth showing off his vocal range by hollering out the chorus in full force. The overall atmosphere is quite comfortable, and the hypnotizing effect aroused from the woodwind instruments creates an absorbing mood one might not expect to find here. Snippets of jazz fusion make up the title track, overlapped with some rich saxophone playing. After a few listens, this band slowly rises from being heard to being enjoyable.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK:
MARIA MULDAUR - Steady Love (2011)
For her 39th solo album, Steady Love, Maria Muldaur has abandoned her recent practice of making acoustic blues recordings in tribute to early blues artists, and traveled to New Orleans to host an electric band (keyboardist Dave Torkanowsky, guitarist Shane Theriot, bassist Johnny Allen, and drummer Kenny Blevins) in a mixed collection of new and old folk, blues, and gospel tunes; the result is one of the best albums of her career. Released two weeks after the singer's 68th birthday, Steady Love is anchored by two songs written by the bluesy folk singer/songwriter Greg Brown, the title song and 'Blues Go Walking,' the former boasting a horn arrangement (courtesy of saxophonist Jimmy Carpenter) that has something of the languid feel of her hit 'Midnight at the Oasis,' and the latter reveling in a jug band feel that harks back to her days with Jim Kweskin. A mini-set of gospel tunes begins with the traditional 'I Done Made It Up in My Mind,' arranged by Muldaur as a shuffle, and continues with 'Walk by Faith,' a song by the late Stephen Bruton, recently celebrated for his contributions to the film Crazy Heart, which has an arrangement sestive of Little Feat, before concluding with the soulful 'As an Eagle Stirreth in Her Nest.' The blues workout 'Rain Down Tears' and Rick Vito's defiant closer 'I Am Not Alone' (with slide guitar by the songwriter) feature daughter Jenni Muldaur on harmony vocals. Appropriately, feel is everything on this session, and that's never more apparent than on the one track flown in from a separate California session, a version of Percy Mayfield's 'Please Send Me Someone to Love.' It's not bad, just different, with a cleaner sound and a more restrained tone, as if borrowed from a Bonnie Raitt album. Most of Steady Love is steamier than that, and the better for it. - cdunivers.com

BUDDY WHITTINGTON - Six String Svengali (2011)
Texan blues guitarist Buddy Whittington spent many years as John Mayall's sideman and only stepped out as the leader of his own band in recent years; it's one thing polishing your reputation as a great blues guitarist but it's quite another to take on the responsibilities of writing the material and singing it, and on the evidence of this record, it's a wonder that Buddy Whittington didn't make the jump sooner. The eleven tracks here represent a fair old tour of electric blues: touching rock (ZZ Top - style), country (Hot Rod Lincoln style) and a bit of the old Allman Brothers sound, there's a distinct Texan/Southern flavour to Buddy's music. Perhaps surprisingly, he doesn't write his own material so that he might show off his guitar prowess; he wears his skill lightly and slips his fast fingered solos into the middle section, always resisting the temptation to make it all about the guitar. That said, you don't have to be paying too close attention to realise what a master the man is, from the grungey heaviness of Fender Champ to the fast picking of I Had To Go See Alice, he can do it all. Good stuff all round then, an entertaining forty minutes in the company of a big man with a hefty talent. - buddywhittington.com

THE BLUEBIRDS - Swamp Stomp (1996)
The Bluebirds hail from Shreveport, Louisiana and combine all the best elements that town's melting pot of musical elements has to offer. They play lean, clean and bluesy, with a style more than a bit reminiscent of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Buddy Flett plays great slide guitar, is the nominal leader of this trio and wrote ten of the fourteen on this, their debut outing. With a brick-solid rhythm section of brother Bruce Flett on bass and Kerry Hunter on drums, The Bluebirds' sound is rootsy without being reverent, modern without losing its soul. Highlights include 'Testing the Water,' '3rd House on the Left' and a wild version of Leadbelly's 'No More Cane on the Brazos.' - cduniverse.com

THE ALVIN LEE BAND - Freefall (1980)
Listen to the very first cut on Freefall and you'll understand the basic problem with the Alvin Lee Band: the track is a nice piece of mid-tempo rock, rather catchy, but is Alvin Lee in there anywhere? Repeated listenings reveal that he might be singing background vocals, and that guitar lead sounds like a slick studio player who listened to a few Ten Years After records one afternoon. From the sound of the whole track, the rest of the band had been listening to Foreigner. Not everything on this album is as anonymous as the first track, and some of it sounds pretty good. This band probably should have been called the Lee/Gould band, as former Rare Bird vocalist Steve Gould has at least as much to do with the sound of the band on those first few tracks. About four cuts into Freefall, Lee seems to wake up, and he turns in some really tasty guitar and a nice, energetic vocal on 'Stealin'.' There are even a few whoops and shrieks thrown in, and that's OK, because the song deserves it. So does 'Ridin' Truckin' and 'Sooner Or Later,' which has a nice horn flourish and a tasty little organ line by guest Al Kooper. The latter track is, in fact, one of the more successful mergers of Lee's straight-ahead style with a complex arrangement, and shows the potential of the band. The closer, 'Dustbin City,' might even be worthy of some air guitar for those who are so inclined. Still, there's a problem here. Fans of Lee will be unhappy that he is tamed on so many of these cuts, and fans of mid-tempo AOR ballads will find too many rockers here for their tastes. The album isn't bad, but it isn't unified or satisfying. - allmusic.com

GEOFF & MARIA MULDAUR
While at Cambridge, MA, Maria Muldaur joined the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and began an affair with singer Geoff Muldaur; the couple eventually married and had a daughter, Jenni, who would later become a singer in her own right. When the Kweskin band broke up in 1968, the couple stayed with their label (Reprise) and began recording together as Geoff & Maria Muldaur. They moved to Woodstock, NY, to take advantage of the burgeoning music scene there and issued two albums - 1968's Pottery Pie and 1971's Sweet Potatoes - before Geoff departed in 1972 to form Better Days with Paul Butterfield, a move that signaled not only the end of the couple's musical partnership, but their marriage as well.

LEO SAYER - The Best Of (2011)
Leo Sayer (born Gerard Sayer) had a string of highly polished mainstream pop hits in the late '70s. Sayer began his musical career as the leader of the London-based Terraplane Blues Band in the late '60s. He formed Patches with drummer Dave Courtney in 1971; Courtney used to play with British pop star Adam Faith. Faith was beginning a management career in the early '70s, so Courtney brought Patches to his former employer in hopes of securing a contract. Patches failed to impress Faith, yet he liked Sayer and chose to promote him as a solo artist. Sayer began recording some solo material written with David Courtney at Roger Daltrey's studio; the Who's lead singer liked the Sayer/Courtney originals enough to record a handful himself, including the hit 'Giving It All Away.' Sayer's debut single, 'Why Is Everybody Going Home,' failed to make any impact, yet 1973's 'The Show Must Go On' hit number one in the U.K.; a cover by Three Dog Night stopped Sayer's version from charting in the U.S. The following year he released his first album, Silver Bird.
Silver Bird was followed quickly by Just a Boy, which included two more British hit singles, 'One Man Band' and 'Long Tall Glasses (I Can Dance)'; 'Long Tall Glasses' managed to break Sayer into the American Top Ten in early 1975. Sayer's working relationship with Courtney was severed during the recording of his third album, Another Year (1975). The following year, he released Endless Flight, which was co-written with former Supertramp member Frank Furrell; featuring the number one singles 'You Make Me Feel like Dancing' and 'When I Need You,' the record became his biggest hit in both the U.S. and the U.K., selling over a million copies in America. Following Endless Flight, Sayer became a fixture in the American Top 40, yet his hits began to dry up in England.
Sayer began the '80s with the American number two hit, 'More Than I Can Say,' yet it was his last big single in the U.S. His last chart entry in America was the early 1981 hit 'Living in a Fantasy'; the U.K. hits didn't stop until 1983, after 'Till You Come Back to Me' scraped the charts. After laying low for the rest of the decade, he attempted a comeback in 1990 with Cool Touch, yet it fell on deaf ears. - allmusic.com

V.A. - All You Need Is Covers: The Songs Of The Beatles (1999)
Two CD collection featuring 50 Beatles classics covered by well-known and obscure Pop, MOR and Jazz artists, including Petula Clark doing 'Please Please Me' (in French) and 'Rain', plus P.P. Arnold taking on 'Yesterday' and Jimmy James' rendition of 'Good Day Sunshine'. Other highlights include Todd Rundgren's 'Strawberry Fields Forever' and The Moody Blues' Justin Hayward with Mike Batt taking on 'Blackbird'. Other artists include Tommy Quickly, Max Bygraves, The Kestrels, Glyn Johns and many more. This set was compiled from the British labels Pye, Piccadilly, Transatlantic and Immediate, so is necessarily restricted in what it includes, yet such is the abundance of Beatles covers that there is plenty to enjoy in this eclectic compilation. The covers are presented in Beatles date order, although it does not follow that the actual covers were recorded in that order. The tracks from Let it be precede those from Abbey road. There are also a few songs that the Beatles wrote but did not record themselves, one of these being Step inside love, a UK top ten hit for Cilla Black, but here covered by Nina Baden-Semper, an actress best known for her role in the seventies TV series Love thy neighbour. These are not always the best covers of these songs, but most of them are very enjoyable. - amazon.com

PETER GREEN - The Peter Green Collection (2001)
Peter Green (born Peter Allen Greenbaum, 29 October 1946, in Bethnal Green, London) is a British blues-rock guitarist and the founder of the band Fleetwood Mac. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 for his work with the group, Green's compositions have been covered by artists such as Santana, Aerosmith, Tom Petty, and Judas Priest. A major figure and bandleader in the 'second great epoch' of the British blues movement, Green inspired B. B. King to say, 'He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats.' Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page have both lauded his guitar playing.[6] Green's playing was marked with idiomatic string bending and vibrato[3] and economy of style. Though he played other guitars, he is best known for deriving a unique tone from his 1959 Gibson Les Paul.
He was ranked 38th in Rolling Stone's list of the '100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time'.[8] His tone on the Bluesbreakers instrumental 'The Super-Natural' was rated as one of the fifty greatest of all time by Guitar Player. In June 1996 Green was voted the third-best guitarist of all time in Mojo magazine. - wikiepedia

16 HORSEPOWER - Yours, Truly: The Ultimate Best Of & Rarities Anthology - Remastered (2011)
“Influenced by folk’s more whacked out, gloomy, voodoo-visioned forebears, 16 Horsepower … narrate their haunting campfire-punk yarns without a modern-day care in the world. Instead, David Eugene and his melancholia-drenched posse of LA dreamers prefer the dark grandeur that only comes with mournful swathes of countrified guitar, of heavy-hearted violins, pianos and accordions, of lonesome banjo-picking and Ennio Morricone tautness. Add a dash of Dylan-esque roots-philosophy and the result is a forlorn dustbowl saloon bar where Nick Cave woefully sinks bourbons with the Gun Club only moments after a loved one’s funeral parade. … Sometimes, you just have to accept that there’s, ahem, nothing as pure as folk.” (NME on the album Secret South in 2000).
10 years after the NME raved on 16 Horsepower, Glitterhouse is proud to present a tremendous collection of classic songs and lost treasures. CD 1 is a true “Best Of”. Compiled by fans and music lovers around the globe by voting on various websites, each participant was requested to list his 10 favourite 16 HP songs. The result is a tasteful collection of the band’s core and it surely deserves the title “Best Of”. To add more value we decided to include the two runner-ups here as well. CD 2 collects 13 songs that were never released on the official albums. Single B-Sides, Demo versions, radio sessions – stuff that even the most avid fan might not have in his collection. - glitterhouse.com

YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND
The Yonder Mountain String Band (abbreviated YMSB) is an American progressive bluegrass group from Nederland, Colorado. Composed of Dave Johnston, Jeff Austin, Ben Kaufmann, and Adam Aijala, the band has released five studio albums and several live recordings to date. Yonder Mountain String Band has always played music by its own set of rules. Bending bluegrass, rock and countless other influences that the band cites, Yonder has pioneered a sound of their own. With their traditional lineup of instruments, the band may look like a traditional bluegrass band at first glance but they’ve created their own music that transcends any genre. Dave Johnston points out “What could be more pure than making your own music.” Yonder’s sound cannot be classified purely as “bluegrass” or “string music” but rather it’s an original sound created from “looking at music from [their] own experiences and doing the best job possible.” The band continues to play by their own rules on their new record The Show. The Colorado-based foursome has crisscrossed the country over the past eleven years playing such varied settings as festivals, rock clubs, Red Rocks Amphitheater in the band’s home state, and recently the Democratic National Convention in Denver at Mile High Stadium opening for Barack Obama. Their loyal fanbase has been built from this diverse setting of music venues as fans latched on to their genre-defying original sound.
