Football drills and workouts often train offensive and defensive squads together. Kicking workouts, however, usually involve just the kickers, coaches and an empty practice field. Workouts for football kickers involve various drills that allow punters and place kickers to hone their accuracy, trajectory, kicking attempts from multiple angles and their ability to handle the ball from the snap. Exercises to develop strength and endurance for kickers generally occur away from the field, in the weight room away from practice time.

Accuracy

The most important aspect for a kicker to practice is accuracy. One drill involves placing the ball and tee at a fixed distance from the goal, 7 yards, 10 yards, etc., then having the kicker practice kicking the bottom of the ball to drive it upward and through the goalposts. This drill also allows the kicker to practice kicking form, landing the toe of the kicking foot on the ball at the right points to hit the target. Another drill involves placing the on the kickoff line, where the kicker practices driving the ball toward or away from hypothetical coverage. This means kicking it to the left, right or straight down the center.

Distance and Height

One important skill for both kickers and punters is kicking the ball downfield, high enough so that it has enough hang time for teammates to establish coverage. One effective drill for practicing distance is to have place kickers begin kicking through the goal posts at the 10 yard line, then move the tee back 5 or 10 yards after each kick. The kicker should attempt to maintain accuracy, but the main focus of the drill is to practice establishing the plant foot, and driving the kicking foot through the ball to achieve maximum power. Hangtime drills allow kickers and punters to improve the amount of time that the ball “hangs” in the air after it’s kicked while still in the field of play. This drill is usually performed from one end zone with balls kicked toward the field.

Horseshoe

The horeshoe drill is a combination of distance and accuracy, but it requires the kicker to set up the tee at various points on the field, rather than from a straight centerline from the goal. Usually, the various placements of the kicking tee will resemble a horsehoe or semi-circle across the field. The kicker will kick away from one side and set up the tee at multiple points along the arc. This allows the kicker to practice the proper footwork necessary to get the ball accurately through the uprights from all possible angles that may arise in a game situation.

Lines and Numbers

The lines and numbers drill allows punters to practice precise placement of punts to the most common in-game targets: the space between the out-of-bounds lines and the yard marker numbers painted on the field. In most cases, a punted ball that lands in this alley when kicked from the middle of the field will quickly roll out of bounds. The drill can be performed in one of two ways. The punter drop-kicks the ball from the center hash mark on the 20- or 30-yard line and works on the foot placement necessary to drop the ball into the gap. The punter may also practice punting while standing on the boundary line, and attempt to direct the ball so that it lands directly on the line down the field.
