HN Review 2: Psychological subtleties - Steve Banachek Shaw
AD:
In this long-awaited new book, Banachek reveals the true secrets of his success: psychological subtleties that transform 'mental magic' into 'psychic entertainment.' Most of the effects require no advance preparation and may be performed at a moment's notice. Those who have Steve's earlier monographs will not hesitate to add this to their libraries.
From the introduction by Teller: 'BANACHEK IS BRILLIANT at subtle deceptions. My partner Penn and I have repeatedly called upon his vast knowledge, diabolical ingenuity, and remarkable imagination, and have never beendisappointed. This man has the goods, and now you do, too. But be careful. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS BOOK. In the wrong hands, these subtle, deeply devious methods could be used to convince audiences that the performer is not an artist, but a supernatural being...'
REVIEW:
The name says it all - a book full of 'psychological convincers' and forces to be integrated in your routines. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific issue, i.e. cards, coins, postcards, dreams, handwriting, metal bending, drawings, hands etc.
Most of the chapters are unfortunately very short (each of them could have taken a full book...) and only skim the surface of the issue.
My personal favorite is a letter divination (also published in Knepper's Wonder Words and Busch's Peek Performances), used in conjunction with a booktest.
Overall rating: Excellent

guys, I blush, thanks for the kind words.
One thing I did want to point out is that Steve Shaw is my real name, one I use for personal reasons.
Banachek is my stage name.
Many mistakenly call me Steve Banachek or Steve Banachek Shaw. An easy mistake to make. And one I helped to create confusion with myself in the change over to Banachek. Sorry about that.
In this case it should be Steve 'Banachek' Shaw. I always insist now that it just be 'Banachek' in any writings or publications.
Again, thanks guys for the kind words.
There may be 2nd volumne of the mentioned work sometime in the future. If anyone has anything interesting to contribute I would be very happy to look at it.

Banachek,
I apologize for the name inaccuracy in my previous post. Congratulations again for your work - will be eagerly waiting for Psychological Subtleties II (as everybody here, I suppose)

How many of you are USING the material in Psychological Subtleties 2? And does this book contain a lot of intimate close-up mentalism, or is it material for platform and stage?

I use stuff from the first book all the time. The second book is very good, but I have not worked with it so much yet.

The second book has more full routines using some of the psychological subtleties. I love the book and have already added 2 effects to my repetoir. That's a lot for me.

This is a fantastic book that should be added to the serious mentalist's collection.
Indeed, the many 'complete routines from professionals' will blow you away, intrigue you, and hopefully get you thinking about your own presentations. The subtle convincers and observations that Banachek includes are, in themselves, worth more than the price of the book.
I give this book my highest recommendation, and I am eagerly awaiting Psychological Subtleties 3.

The second book has many routines in mentalism... to be honest some are amazing and some are not for me. I tried a couple and the reactions are great.. Great book!
